How exactly does marrying for claims work anyway? HRE and South/East Europe tend to fair a lot better in my games cause they're cultures are much more fragmented and rebellious. I think the large culture culture groups of French and Occitan are part of the problem, as it's easy to build up high cultural acceptance and obedience for dozens of counties and vassals after conquest. I feel like this really kills the challange of playing in the area and I rarely find myself playing those campaigns past 950.Įvery game I've played neighbouring western/central Europe since release I always end up owning most of Francia by the first half of the 900s.Įven in games where I try to play an isolated Britannia or Hispania, i marry some random son/grandsom to some random French/Lothar princess, and lo and behold a couple of years to decades later I have some wives and grandkids ready to get their claim for the region pushed vs rulers with no real military. When their kingdoms break up, it's easy to diplo-vassalize the counts and smaller dukes. Their ducal rulers also tend to blob but have very little military to back themselves up. Their kings often have little troops despite controlling a lot of land. It is very easy to get claims or claimants to entire kingdoms - West Francia, Aquitane, Lotharingia. I think the Francia and the western part of the HRE are way too easy to conquer as an outsider, especially in the early game.
